Industry Insights

Going Digital Isn’t the Goal. Utilisation Is the Work.

Digitalisation is everywhere in Singapore haulage. Jobs arrive on WhatsApp, drivers carry smartphones, and invoices go out by email. But going digital on its own doesn’t move a single container. The real, unfinished work is turning that adoption into utilisation: fewer empty trips, fuller schedules and better use of every prime mover you already own.

Fuel, wages, parking and compliance are largely outside any haulier’s control. The digitalisation piece is the part you can control, and about who should carry the technology load.

Utilisation Is the Real Prize

A prime mover earns only when it’s moving a container. Every hour it waits at a depot, and every kilometre it drives back empty, it’s cost with no revenue.

Three things that eat into utilisation in Singapore’s haulage industry:

  • Fragmented bookings. A truck delivers a laden box and drives back empty because nobody knew about a job nearby. Industry estimates put empty running across the region at close to half of all trips.
  • Small fleets. Singapore’s container haulage community has hundreds of players. With a majority running less than ten trucks. A fleet of ten only sees its own jobs, so a free prime mover and a nearby container often does not match automatically.
  • Idling fleet. Drivers wait at depots or yards because the next job wasn’t confirmed before they finished the last one.

None of this money is lost at the “tech” stage. It’s lost on the road, every day. Digitalisation pays off when it’s fully utilised.

Do You Build It By Yourself?

When a haulier decides to go digital, the first thought is often to do it in-house. Starting with buying a dispatch tool, finding someone to run it, and onboarding each customer. That road is longer than it looks.

Doing it yourself means taking on three jobs that sit outside a haulier’s core skill:

  1. Software. Choosing, setting up and maintaining systems and servers, then training drivers and office staff to use them.
  2. Integrations. Connecting to shippers’ booking systems, Portnet and depot processes, each with its own formats and rules.
  3. A network. The biggest utilisation gains come from seeing jobs beyond your own customers. No single fleet can build that alone.

Even when it works, a tool that only sees your own jobs can help tidy up the paperwork. It can’t automatically match your empty return leg with other hauliers.

The better road is to keep haulage as your core: your drivers, your trucks, your service and your customer relationships. Then choose a partner for the digital layer. The question stops being “what should we build?” and becomes “who should we work with?”

A Shared Platform Turns Small Fleets Into One Network

Haulio is a digital haulage platform connecting shippers with Singapore’s container hauliers. Each fleet stays independent. The platform gives every one of them a shared view of the work.

For a haulier, that changes three things:

  • Pooled jobs and capacity. Shippers post jobs to the platform, and hauliers sees a pool of trucking jobs that was once out of reach. With jobs and trucks in one pool, a return trip or a lull day is easier to fill.
  • Visibility. Job status updates at each milestone, from pickup to delivery, and the documents stay with the job. Shippers gets milestones updates automatically instead of calling your controller, and billing moves faster.
  • Job matching & subletting across a trusted network. Be it trying to match a job to hit your Dual Cycle Incentive (DCI) or need extra help to fulfil your trucking requirements.

What matters most is that this works for small fleets. A five-truck operator gets the same visibility and access to jobs as a bigger player, without building anything of its own.

Telematics Is the Next Efficiency Layer

Booking and dispatch are the first step. The next efficiency layer is telematics: GPS units and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors on prime movers that report location, fuel usage and driving behaviour in real time.

This is what smart fleet management looks like in practice. Spot a fault before it becomes a breakdown on the expressway, see which trips burn the most fuel, and give shippers an arrival time without a phone call.

Telematics works best when the job itself is already digital. A GPS ping means little if the job details belongs to lives in a WhatsApp thread and in spreadsheets. Through Haulio’s platform, you can plug into this next layer without a heavy lift: no separate system to build, and no new project to run yourself.

What This Means for You

You don’t have to digitise the hard way. Building software, integrations and a network yourself pulls time and money away from what your business does best.

Keep haulage as your core: your drivers, your trucks and your service. At Haulio, we build tools to make your job as a haulier easier – to simplify your work, streamline your jobs and increase your opportunities through technology

Costs like fuel and wages will keep moving without asking you. How well you use every truck is the part you decide.

What Is Truck Utilisation in Container Haulage?

Truck utilisation is the share of a prime mover’s working time spent moving containers for paying trips. Empty return trips, idle waiting at depots and unbooked hours all lower it. For hauliers, it’s one of the clearest measures of whether a fleet is earning its costs.

Do Small Hauliers Need to Build Their Own Digital Systems?

No. Building software, integrations and a job network in-house is costly and sits outside core haulage. Joining a digital haulage platform gives a small fleet the same job visibility and tracking as a large one, without the build.

How Does a Digital Haulage Platform Reduce Empty Trips?

A platform pools jobs from many shippers in one place, so hauliers can plan their trip deployment ahead with ease. That makes it easier to respond to a job on the platform instead of driving back empty. The wider the network, the more chances there are to match a free truck with a waiting container.
